AFLTA District 4
Festival 2013
You're Connected- Now Communicate!

February 1 is the last day to sign up!
On Saturday, March 2nd, the other foreign language teachers and I plan on attending the AFLTA (Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association) District IV Foreign Language Festival.

This is an annual festival designed for French, Spanish, and German students in our area to compete and show off their language and artistic skills. Each of us may bring up to 20 students with us. So, you may want to begin thinking about whether or not you would like to participate in the Festival. There are various activities in which you may want to participate, which are listed below.

Also, each year has a different theme, and this year’s theme is “You're Connected- Now Communicate.” This is the theme that you would use for your art entries.

Individual Events include:

  • Extemporaneous Reading- read aloud a short passage in French

  • Extemporaneous Speaking- talk about a picture or series of pictures

Here are the speaking prompts that have been released for the District IV festival:
Level 1 at park / at school
Level 2 getting ready / doing chores
Level 3 camping trip / medical emergency
Level 4 recycling / staying healthy
Heritage holidays and fairy tales / a trip
  • Poetry Recitation- This competition will judge students on their ability to interpret the poem that corresponds to their particular level. They will be critiqued on memorization/preparedness, pace/fluency, confidence/poise, pronunciation/accuracy, and intonation/expression.

  • Vocabulary Bee
    mastery of general level-appropriate vocabulary

  • Culture Contest
determine students’ level of knowledge about a variety of cultural topics relevant to the language being studied
format is much like that of Quiz Bowl

  • Art
generate visual artworks that illustrate the theme of each year’s festival
(Please note that I may only submit five pieces, and entries may not be larger than 28x22 inches. Entries using paint, markers, pen, pencil, chalk, pastels, or crayons are accepted.)

Group Events include:

  • Drama entry
A creative and fun student-centered activity is the skit. Skits are to be performed in the target language and should not exceed 5 minutes. Skits are limited to one (1) entry per teacher and do NOT have to be written by the students. Skits (including costumes & props) should be appropriate for ALL audiences and therefore should be in good taste.

  • Talent entry
Students will perform a vocal, instrumental, and/or dance number individually or in groups. Talent entries are limited to one (1) entry per teacher.

If you think you definitely would like to participate, I encourage you to check out the materials below.
I am very excited about this event, and I hope that you will consider participating!
